People Tanzania has about 120 tribes, most of them belonging to the Bantu people. One of the largest tribes, the Masai, belongs to the Nilotic group. All these different peoples and tribes have since indepence, unlike many other African countries, managed to build a coherent society without important ethnic tensions. Language All these different tribes have their own languages. The national language is Swahili, but English is common in the major cities. Climate The coastal areas are hot and humid, with an average day temperature of 30°C. The main rainy season is from March to June, the dry hot months being from October to February. The central plateau (1,200m above sea level) has hot days and cool nights. National Parks A vast part of the territory is set aside as Natioal Park, Game Reserve or Game Controlled Area. some of the world's most famous national parks, like the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, are to be found here. Political system The country was ruled by its first president Julius Nyerere and his CCM party in a one-party system for a long time. In the early nineties, a multi-party system with free elections was introduced. Since then, the ruling CCM party managed to win every election significantly.
