On this trip you will get an idea of day-to-day life in one of the most colourful cities
of Tanzania. People of many different tribes and religions live together in Arusha. Your

Depending on your own personal interests, you will visit colonial buildings, AICC (which
houses the International Rwanda Tribunal), the railway station, monuments, a mosque, a
local market and local bars.
Not only tourist places will be visited, but also places you would not easily find by
yourself as well.

Visit the Sanawari neighbourhood :
On this tour you will visit a batik artist, a local coffin carpenter, a knife grinder,
a kettle maker, a hairdresser, a secondary school, a tourguiding school, a village court,
have drink in a local bar and get a feel of daily life in this neighbourhood near Arusha.
You will use local transport (dala dala).

Local Masai markets :
On Masai market days many Masai gather to buy and sell cattle and all kinds of goods. It
is a social gathering as well. You will get a first glimpse of Masai life here. Take a
look at traditional tools, enjoy the colourful outfits, get an insight in traditional
Masai medicine, see how cattle is being inspected and sold, observe a goat being
slaughtered and taste the nyama choma ya mbuzi (grilled goat meat).
This visit can be combined with an interesting walk in the surrounding villages and
countryside.

Visit a traditional Masai boma :
Local transport brings you in about 1 hour and 45 min from Arusha to Monduli Juu, 50 kms
northwest of Arusha town. From there it's a short distance to Emairete, where the tour
starts.
Emairete consists of a wonderful crater where, in former times, only medecine men were
supposed to graze their cattle. You guide will bring you to up hill to the boma of
midwife Mama Oletiambuti. She will explain you all about traditional Masai way of living :
the importance of cattle, greetings, behavior, clothes, traditional medicines, the
structure of a boma,...
Afterwards, you'll walk around Emairete village, seel local Masai in their daily
activities, walk some nature trails and visit a local bar on Emairete market, where you
can taste the locally brewed beer, while waiting for your transport back to Monduli and
Arusha.

Lake Duluti nature walk :
Hop in a dala dala (local transport) that brings you in 20 min to Tengeru, a
lively village along the Moshi/Arusha road. You'll find yourself in the middle of a
beautiful green countryside.
Your guide takes you through abundant coffee and banana plantations and on a relaxing
walk around Lake Duluti Forest Reserve. You'll identify the many different bird species
that can be found here.
The walk ends in the village, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink in a local bar and
try a chips mayai (chips in an omelet) or a delicious nyama choma, the
typical Tanzanian barbeque.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can also take a stroll through the interesting local
market.

Oldonyo Sapuku nature trail :
Welcome to the extensive village of Sapuku on the foothills of Mt.Meru, where you can
experience daily life of traditional Masai and Wameru tribes, spot rare birds and

Learn how to cook Tanzanian food :
Your guide will give you a short introduction on Tanzanian food and explain about the
different local dishes. After you have decided on the menu you'd like to cook, you'll go
and buy all ingredients at the local market.
At a local household in Arusha your guide will show you the cooking utensils that are
used in Tanzania, before you can start the actual preparations.
You'll have your meal outside on reed mats under the banana trees. After your meal you
can have a short walk around the neighbourhood.

Learn how to make a batik :
Batiks are a familiar sight for everyone visiting Tanzania. This art originated in
Indonesia and has become a popular tool of expression for artists worldwide.
You are welcome to visit a batik workshop and see the step-by-step procedure of making
a batik, explained to you by one of the artists.
Duration : 4-6 hours (depending on the weather)

A taste of the Swahili language :
Learn basic Swahili in one hour or follow an extended course. Your teacher will help you
to understand and use the basic words that you encounter every day.
Local people appreciate it a lot if you are able to answer them in their own language
when they greet you, and its much more fun communicating with Tanzanians in Swahili.

Explore the Ngoma (drums) and various Tanzanian rhythms, assisted by a professional
drummer. Sessions of one hour or half day are possible.

In this 3-days workshop you'll learn how to make your own Tanzanian Ngoma from
start to finish, and you'll go home with some experience playing the Ngoma as well.
A professional drummer will take you through the different phases step by step.
Day 1 : Make your piece of wood hollow inside.
Day 2 : Take the bark from the outside.
Day 3 : Smooth the surface, attach the cowskin to the wood and finish your drum.
