Coral reefs are a wonder of nature. It has taken millions of years for billions of
generations of tiny animals to build the beautiful todays coral reefs. The finest coral
reefs are found in the Red Sea, the east coast of Australia and the Indian Ocean, along
the coastline of Tanzania. Here one finds numurous smaller and bigger, mostly uninhabited
coral islands, formed by an uplift of the ocean floor. The well known tropical island of
Zanzibar is such an island. The island is therefore a paradise for snorkeling and scuba
diving. At low tide, snorkeling can be done just above the coral banks in very shallow
water. While scuba diving, encounters with sea turtles, manta rays, dolphins, wales and
sharks are not uncommon.
